Dear
Assemblyman _________,
Insurance
discrimination (i.e., denial of homeowners or renters insurance coverage)
continues to be a paramount issue for many dog owners throughout California.
Many people have had to choose between a loved family pet or insurance. This
decision is usually made not on any animal-specific grounds, but rather is
based solely upon the breed.
Washington
State is dealing directly with this issue, "Deeds Not Breeds," in
HB 1016. California should follow Washington's example. As an owner of Doberman
Pinschers, I have experienced this discrimination firsthand from several insurers,
including Farmers and Allstate. I ask that you, as my Representative, initiate
and support similar legislation in California to end this discrimination.
More ethical, responsible pet ownership, along with accountable pet owners,
is the answer, not insurance discrimination. I believe our focus should be
on the deed, not the breed. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
